Metal Core PCB (MCPCB)
Boards built on a metal base -- commonly aluminum or copper -- with a thin dielectric between the base and the circuit, so heat spreads into the metal instead of staying in the laminate.

Overview
Boards built on a metal base -- commonly aluminum or copper -- with a thin dielectric between the base and the circuit, so heat spreads into the metal instead of staying in the laminate.
Why it matters
High-power LEDs and power components run cooler and last longer when heat has a short path to a large thermal mass. A metal core provides that at board level, often without extra heatsinking hardware.
Typical Applications
- LED lighting
- Power supplies and converters
- Automotive lighting and power modules
- Motor controllers
Manufacturing Considerations
- Dielectric thermal conductivity is the key specification to agree up front
- Most metal core designs are single- or few-layer builds
- Drilling and routing a metal base needs different tooling than FR-4
